Shepherd Center recently announced that Michael Smith, D.O., has joined its medical staff.

As a staff physiatrist, Dr. Smith will provide care for patients in the Dean Stroud Spine and Pain Institute at Shepherd Center, which provides long-term pain management and therapy for individuals experiencing chronic pain.

“We are excited to welcome Dr. Smith to our medical staff,” said Michael Yochelson, M.D., MBA, chief medical officer of Shepherd Center. “His extensive training and specialization, especially in unique populations, will be a huge asset as we aim to serve more people experiencing complex and chronic pain.”

Dr. Smith attended medical school at Nova Southeastern University Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Osteopathic Medicine, after which he completed his residency in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center and an interventional spine fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine.

“I look forward to working with patients to improve their health through a multidisciplinary approach to function and quality of life,” Dr. Smith said. “At the Pain Institute, we can provide fluoroscopic and ultrasound-guided procedures of the spine and extremities, medication management, osteopathic manual medicine, physical therapy, and other modalities, all customized to meet the needs of each patient so that they can live their best life.”

Dr. Smith joins Erik Shaw, D.O., medical director of the Pain Institute, who has been caring for patients there since 2006.
