Forbes Lists Shepherd Center Among the Top 10 Employers in Georgia

Independent survey of employees yields high ranking for the hospital.

Shepherd Center has been recognized in Forbes’ inaugural list of America’s Best-in-State Employers for 2019. The hospital ranked No. 10 among the 56 employers included in the list for Georgia.

Forbes and Statista, a market research firm, selected America’s Best-in-State Employers based on an independent survey from a sample of more than 80,000 U.S. employees working for companies employing at least 500 people in their U.S. operations. The recommended employers are grouped into 25 industry sectors. Shepherd Center is categorized in the Healthcare & Social sector.

Employees were asked to rate their willingness to recommend their own employers to friends and family. Participants were also prompted to evaluate other employers in their respective industries that stood out either positively or negatively. The surveys were administered in a series of anonymous online panels and provide a representative sample of the U.S. workforce.

“Shepherd Center is successful because we have extremely mission-driven employees who bring their best to work each and every day to serve our patients,” said Sarah Morrison, PT, MBA, MHA, president and CEO of Shepherd Center. “They are the epitome of professionalism and live out our positive culture each and every day.”

Employees participating in the Forbes survey were asked 35 questions about work-related topics, including working conditions, salary, potential for development and company image regarding their current employer. The rate of agreement/disagreement regarding the statements was measured on a five-point Likert scale. In total, the survey took an average of 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and the survey period ran from October 2018 to February 2019.

Shepherd Center, which employs more than 1,700 full- and part-time employees is ranked by U.S. News & World Report among the top 10 rehabilitation hospitals in the nation. The hospital is known for its specialized care and research for people with spinal cord injury, brain injury, stroke, multiple sclerosis, spine and chronic pain, and other neuromuscular conditions. It is also noted for its patient-centered culture and its origins as a hospital founded by an Atlanta family that saw a need for specialized rehabilitation care. Founded in 1975, Shepherd Center has grown from a six-bed rehabilitation unit to a world-renowned, 152-bed hospital that treats more than 900 inpatients, 550 day program patients and more than 7,300 outpatients each year.

In addition to the Forbes ranking, the Atlanta Business Chronicle has ranked Shepherd Center among the top five on its list of the Best Places to Work in the extra-large company category for the past two years.
