Alana Shepherd Named Recipient of the E. Milton Bevington Distinguished Entrepreneur Award from the MIT Enterprise Forum of Atlanta

Alana Shepherd has been named this year’s recipient of the E. Milton Bevington Distinguished Entrepreneur Award from the MIT Enterprise Forum of Atlanta.

The award is presented to an individual who has made an extraordinary contribution to the Atlanta technology community through innovation, inspiration and determination.

"I am thrilled to be recognized by the MIT Enterprise Forum of Atlanta with this award, which is named in honor of my late, great friend, Milton Bevington,” Mrs. Shepherd said. “I am so honored."

In 1975, Mrs. Shepherd, her husband Harold, and her son James co-founded Shepherd Center after the family learned about the lack of high-quality, specialized rehabilitation care in the Southeast. James sustained a spinal cord injury in 1973 and had to travel to halfway across the United States to receive specialized rehabilitation care.

Today, Shepherd Center is world-renowned, 132-bed hospital specializing in medical treatment, research and rehabilitation for people with spinal cord injury and brain injury.

Mrs. Shepherd is one of the center’s chief fundraisers and volunteers. She is active at Shepherd Center, leading tours for potential donors and visiting patients and their families to encourage

The MIT Enterprise Forum of Atlanta is a volunteer, non-profit organization whose mission is to provide educational programs and services that promote and strengthen innovation and entrepreneurship at the intersection of business and technology in the Southeast.

The 2011 Distinguished Entrepreneur Gala will be held April 16 in ballroom at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta.

David O. Ellis, Managing Director, EGL Holdings, and a member of the Shepherd Center Advisory Board, will introduce Mrs. Shepherd. Guests are invited to participate in a behind the scenes tours of the Federal Reserve Bank's money museum during the reception, with dinner and the presentation to follow.
