U.S. News & World Report Ranks Shepherd Center Among Best in Rehabilitation

Shepherd Center has been recognized again as one of the top 10 rehabilitation hospitals in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in their 2017-18 Best Hospitals rankings.

The annual Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 28th year, are part of U.S. News’ patient portal, designed to help patients make informed decisions about where to receive care for life-threatening conditions or for common elective procedures.

“Shepherd Center is honored to be ranked by U.S. News and World Report as No. 9 on their list of the best rehabilitation hospitals in the country,” said Sarah Morrison, PT, MBA, MHA, president and CEO of Shepherd Center. “We provide world-class, specialized medical and rehabilitation care for people with spinal cord and brain injury, multiple sclerosis, spine and chronic pain and other neuromuscular conditions. We also create a culture of hope and recovery for our patients and their families, who come to us from across the nation and the world. U.S. News and World Report’s ranking validates our efforts and inspires us to strive for continued excellence.”

Shepherd Center first appeared on the magazine’s list of the best U.S. rehabilitation hospitals in 2000 and has been consistently ranked in the top 10 since 2008.

For the 2017-18 rankings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 25 specialties, procedures and conditions. In the 16 specialty areas, which include rehabilitation, 152 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty.

Rehabilitation hospitals are ranked by reputation alone based on annual surveys of physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians nationwide. Ranked hospitals are those nominated by at least 5 percent of responding physicians within the past three years.

“For nearly three decades, we’ve strived to make hospital quality more transparent to healthcare consumers nationwide,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “By providing the most comprehensive data available, we hope to give patients the information they need to find the best care across a range of specialties.”

Best Hospitals was produced by U.S. News with RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
