U.S. News & World Report Again Names Shepherd Center Among Best in Rehabilitation

Shepherd Center moves up in the rankings, listed in the top 10 since 2008.

Shepherd Center has again been recognized among the top 10 Best Hospitals for Rehabilitation by U.S. News & World Report. In the 2021-22 rankings released today, Shepherd Center moved up to No. 7 from the No. 8 spot last year. The neurorehabilitation hospital has been in the top 10 since 2008.

The annual Best Hospitals rankings and ratings, now in their 32nd year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for challenging health conditions or for common elective procedures.

“In a year of extraordinary challenges in healthcare, it is especially rewarding to be recognized by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top rehabilitation hospitals in the country,” said Sarah Morrison, PT, MBA, MHA, president and CEO of Shepherd Center. “This recognition underscores the unwavering commitment of our staff to restoring the lives of our patients and their families.”

For the 2021-22 rankings and ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,750 medical centers nationwide in 15 specialties and 17 procedures and conditions. In the 15 specialty areas, 175 hospitals were ranked in at least one specialty. In rankings by state and metro area, U.S. News recognized hospitals as high performing across multiple areas of care.

“This year’s expanded report from U.S. News includes new ratings for important procedures and conditions to help each patient pick the right hospital for the type of care they need,” said Ben Harder, managing editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “Hospitals faced incredible challenges this past year, and the best of them have provided great care throughout the pandemic and continue to offer excellent care today.”

The U.S. News Best Hospitals methodologies in most areas of care are based largely on objective measures such as risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates, volume, and quality of nursing, among other care-related indicators.

For the 2021-22 Best Hospitals specialty rankings, U.S. News & World Report introduced a new methodology for the rehabilitation rankings. Rankings of specialties are no longer solely based on expert opinion, and there are new measures in structure and outcomes providing a data-driven ranking of rehabilitation facilities. The goal of the changes is to provide consumers with more information about the quality of care in inpatient rehabilitation facilities across the United States and will continue to evolve over time as additional data are available for inclusion in the rankings. The key research question for the rehabilitation rankings is which facilities provide the best care for complex inpatient cases.

Best Hospitals was produced by U.S. News with RTI International, a leading research organization based in Research Triangle Park, N.C.
