Shepherd Center Ranks Among Top 10 in U.S. News & World Report’s Best Hospitals

Shepherd Center rose from the No. 10 spot to No. 9 in a 2014-15 list of the top 10 rehabilitation hospitals in the nation in a U.S. News & World Report survey released today. The rankings are published online at www.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will be published in U.S. News’s annual guidebook, Best Hospitals 2015, which will be available in August.

For the first time ever in the rehabilitation hospital rankings, Shepherd Center tied for No. 9 with Rusk Rehabilitation at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City. Shepherd ranked among nearly 50 facilities that earned a spot in the magazine’s survey of rehabilitation hospitals. Shepherd Center first appeared on the list in 2000.

Also, U.S. News & World Report announced that Shepherd Center ranked No. 2 in the Atlanta metro area in the magazine’s “Best Hospitals” metro area rankings for 2014-15 and No. 3 in Georgia. These rankings were released simultaneously with the national rankings.

U.S. News publishes Best Hospitals to help guide patients who need a high level of care because they face particularly difficult surgery, a challenging condition, or extra risk because of age or multiple health problems.

Rehabilitation hospitals are ranked by reputation alone based on the latest three annual surveys of physical medicine and rehabilitation physicians. Those receiving nominations from an average of at least 5 percent of the responding specialists and the last three surveys are nationally ranked Best Hospitals. Those nominated by at least 3 percent but less than 5 percent of physicians are high-performing Best Regional Hospitals.

For 2014-15, U.S. News evaluated hospitals in 16 adult specialties and ranked the top 50 in most of the specialties. Just 3 percent of the nearly 5,000 hospitals that were analyzed for Best Hospitals 2014-15 earned national ranking in even one specialty.

“The data tell the story – a hospital that emerged from our analysis as one of the best has much to be proud of,” said U.S. News Health Rankings Editor Avery Comarow. “A Best Hospital has demonstrated its expertise in treating the most challenging patients.”
