New Physician Joins Shepherd Center Medical Staff

Wesley Chay, M.D., to lead two treatment teams on the hospital’s Comprehensive Rehabilitation Unit.

Shepherd Center has announced that Wesley Chay, M.D., joined the hospital’s medical staff on July 3, 2017. He is leading two interdisciplinary treatment teams in Shepherd Center’s Comprehensive Rehabilitation Unit (CRU).

“Dr. Chay is an incredibly talented physician and was with us as chief resident of the Emory program,” said Donald Peck Leslie, M.D., Shepherd Center medical director. “We have followed his career closely and feel very fortunate that he chose Shepherd as his physiatric practice.”

Dr. Chay received both a bachelor’s degree in zoology and his medical degree from the University of Florida. Most recently, he served as the clinical director of the Inpatient Spinal Cord Injury Program in the Department of Physical Medicine at Rehabilitation at MossRehab in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania.

“The new teams for the CRU were created to allow Shepherd Center to provide care to more individuals with catastrophic injuries and neurological diseases,” Dr. Chay said. “I am humbled and honored to have the privilege of leading these new interdisciplinary teams on the CRU.”

The CRU was designed for patients who are admitted with conditions that occurred post-injury or disease, and offers treatment to stabilize these conditions and help secure better health.

The CRU admits patients who have sustained a catastrophic injury resulting in an amputation, multiple trauma, spinal cord injury or acquired brain injury. The unit provides care to patients, including those who require skin surgery for pressure injuries, patients admitting due to secondary medical complications associated with spinal cord and brain injuries, and patients with a new diagnosis of a neurological disease, such as multiple sclerosis.

“I am committed to ensuring that current and future patients and families who choose to come to Shepherd Center will receive the best care available,” Dr. Chay said.
